NITDA Issues Alert on Rising Smishing Threats in Nigeria: Stay Vigilant!

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a critical alert warning Nigerians of increasing smishing threats targeting mobile users across the country. Smishing, a type of cybercrime involving fraudulent SMS messages, has been on the rise, with cybercriminals aiming to steal sensitive personal information, such as bank account details, passwords, and other credentials.

What is Smishing?

Smishing (SMS phishing) is a technique where attackers send deceptive text messages posing as legitimate organizations, such as banks, service providers, or government agencies, urging users to click malicious links or share private information. These messages often trick users into believing they need to update their account details or verify their identity.

NITDA’s Alert

In its latest advisory, NITDA emphasized the urgency for Nigerians to be cautious and verify any unsolicited SMS messages before taking action. The agency highlighted that the messages typically contain links to fraudulent websites or phone numbers, which when clicked, could compromise personal data or infect devices with malware.

How to Stay Protected

To guard against smishing attacks, NITDA recommends:

  • Do not click on links or download attachments from suspicious or unsolicited SMS messages.
  • Verify the source: If you receive a message from a bank or service provider, contact them directly using official communication channels.
  • Install security software on your mobile device to detect malicious apps and links.
  • Report any smishing attempts to your network provider or cybersecurity agencies.

NITDA’s Role in Cybersecurity

As the primary agency for technology development in Nigeria, NITDA continues to spearhead efforts to raise public awareness about emerging cyber threats. The agency is working closely with service providers and law enforcement agencies to monitor and combat cybercrimes like smishing, ensuring that Nigerians can safely use mobile technology.
